Lothian and Borders Presbytery: Reflections and Update
Dear Friends,
Achievements and Challenges Since Formation
As Interim Clerk, I have witnessed significant accomplishments by the Lothian and Borders Presbytery since its inception three years ago. Planning for the future of our Church has demanded both creativity and decisive action. While sustaining worship and community has presented its own set of challenges, meaningful progress has been achieved. Many will feel the absence of Norman Smith’s leadership, and I urge you all to keep the search for his successor as Presbytery Clerk in your prayers.
Commitment to Service and Community
Our Church remains steadfast in its dedication to serving Jesus Christ, nurturing Christian community, and supporting worship throughout the region. This commitment endures, even when resources such as personnel and finances are limited, reminding us of the importance and resilience of our collective mission.
Church Buildings and Congregational Support
Although we have no shortage of buildings within our Church, some do present difficulties regarding maintenance and their suitability for contemporary use. The Presbytery of Lothian is determined to retain as many buildings as is practical and affordable. Fortunately, we are blessed with devoted congregations—ministers, elders, and worshippers—whose active participation sustains our worship. I have appreciated working alongside many of you, particularly during periods of vacancy and in planning for the future.
Remembering Jim Wallace, Baron Wallace of Tankerness
Last week, I received news about Jim Wallace, Baron Wallace of Tankerness—a highly respected elder at St Magnus Cathedral and a former moderator of the General Assembly. His faith profoundly shaped his legal and political career, enhancing his service as an MP and MSP. The many recent tributes highlight the esteem in which he was held by colleagues across the spectrum. His unwavering integrity and faith were evident in all his endeavours, and we are deeply grateful for his guidance to the church, both locally and nationally.
Legacy and Future Engagement
His legacy serves as a reminder of the vital role elders play at both presbytery and national levels. The progress we have made over the past three years is significant, and continued advancement will depend on everyone within Kirk Sessions and congregations reflecting on their contributions towards a vibrant worshipping church for Scotland and beyond.
Looking Forward: A Call to Action
While our former structures have supported us well, the time has come to embrace new organisational frameworks in many areas. If you, or anyone within your congregation, possess relevant skills and a passion for worship and mission within your community, I urge you to step forward and help bring new church visions to life at every level.
Blessings,
John
Rev Dr John Cowie, Interim Presbytery Clerk
